There are standard interview questions for baptism and temple recommends, but until now, there has not been a standard set of questions for prospective missionaries to provide consistency across the Church. The questions about worthiness are similar to those used in temple recommend interviews. The questions about eligibility are to determine whether the candidate is physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared for the rigors of full-time missionary service. Missionaries are most likely to have a successful mission when they are physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared. The requirements for missionary service have not changed. The interview questions come with a several-page addendum with explanations about the standards, including living a moral life, honesty, repentance, and being true to covenants made with God.

Some enjoy the freedom of being single. No sex before marriage an impediment. There is certainly truth there, and I encourage you to add your own perspectives to the question. But before we drill down into these kinds of issues too far, I think it might be helpful first to consider the bigger picture: The number of self-identifying, practicing Mormons is a fraction of that figure.

And we have a culture that favors early marriage. The Church is pretty well represented in the intermountain west. With so many marrying early and off the market and membership so sparse in other areas, the demographics almost by definition are going to be very challenging. Not only are the pure numbers an impediment, but we have a serious case of gender imbalance that makes this a particularly difficult feat for LDS women to achieve.

Share Shares Nearly 15 million Mormons are spread across the world, yet the rest of the population seems to know little about them or their beliefs. They seem like wholesome people, but what are their lives actually like? What rules are the Mormons supposed to follow? These are the people in the white dress shirts who come knocking on your door, wondering if you have time to talk about the Book of Mormon.

Missionary rules are extremely explicit about this: So, if you ever get challenged to a game of ball by a missionary—which actually happens a lot—invite them out to a full court and see how they react.

The younger Italians at least the Romans tended to be uber-progressive Europeans. Can we fix you an espresso? They wanted to talk about movies and music and cars and video games and American politics. Ryan March 17, at 6: I was in Munich, Germany in the early s, and visited a few times to members in Vienna, Austria, and made similar observations to yours about the lack of growth in southern Germany and Austria, retention issues with converts also mostly immigrants and students , and overall, many members obviously apathetic or their spirit already broken to change the status quo.

Anyway, I feel bad for Marco, but it appears to be a growing trend for Europe.

Why is it so hard for LDS to find marriage partners?

Temple symbolism[ edit ] The Temple itself is a symbol to its members and to the world. Temples are lighted, so they can easily be seen at night, and they are most often built on a hill, so they can be seen from afar. Lighted temples in the darkness symbolize the power and the inspiration of the gospel of Jesus Christ standing as a beacon in a world that sinks ever further into spiritual darkness. Members believe there are messages in temple symbols. These messages come in forms of what the symbols in reality represent and even beyond what they represent.

I mentioned that I had given a presentation on dating and marriage to the youth in our ward and shared some of the things I had talked about. As the conversation continued it turned toward some of the sexual issues in the Church that impact dating and marriage such as pornography and, by implication, masturbation and one of the sisters shared with me a familiar story. She said that almost overnight her typically cheerful teenage son had become sullen, withdrawn, and irritable.

She asked him what was wrong and he replied that he wanted to kill himself. Shocked, she probed deeper and discovered that he had been exposed to pornography and was now dealing with all of the emotional, spiritual, and physiological complications that set upon a teenage boy once that genie is out of the bottle. The purpose of this post is to shed some light on what I feel is a far-reaching and avoidable problem in the Church:

LDS Church Releases Standard Missionary Interview Questions

Why do some women feel unequal in the church? While this was not an exhaustive list, it made apparent many of the gender disparities that we often take for granted. Another way to make inequality apparent is to talk about privilege. An important step in lessening, mitigating and ending this discrimination is acknowledging it. It is sometimes easier to see that others have different gender roles or even that women have some disadvantages.

The truly difficult thing to recognize is the concomitant truth:

The Mormon religion is a form of Christianity that began in Palmyra, NY in the s by Joseph Smith. He later moved to Ohio, and eventually the religion made its way across the country. Followers can be found all throughout the United States. They follow certain traditions within the church .

Young men and young women typically develop such social skills through dating. And dedicating 10, hours to dating prior to marriage is probably not feasible. But frequent dating can bless the lives of young Latter-day Saints — including high-school-age youth preparing for missions, college studies, full-time employment and, eventually, temple marriage.

Youth are also encouraged to go with one or more additional couples when they begin dating, to avoid going on frequent dates with the same person and to invite their parents to get to know those they date.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the growing disparity between the numbers of single Mormon men and single Mormon women. But amidst all the hand-wringing about what this means for dating and marriage, there are larger implications for what it means for Mormonism, and I had quite a few follow-up questions. So I tracked down sociologist Rick Phillips , who with Ryan Cragun has authored the forthcoming study on the sex ratio disparity among Utah Mormons.

Both scholars are past presidents of the Mormon Social Science Association. And this is especially true in Utah as compared to the rest of the nation. Conservative denominations in the United States tend to have more women than men, so the sex ratio imbalance in Mormonism is not particularly surprising, even if it is rather severe.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) teaches that gender is defined in the premortal existence, and that part of the purpose of mortal life is for men and women to be sealed together, forming bonds that allow them to progress eternally together in the afterlife. It also teaches that sexual relations within the framework.

The activities range from fun-based activities such as dances or weekend conferences, to religious instruction such as Institute of Religion classes or firesides. Young single adult wards[ edit ] A ward in the LDS Church is usually geographically constructed, but exceptions are made such as for wards for a specific language or for young single adults. Formerly, the LDS Church maintained student wards and singles wards, but now young single adults, depending on their location, may have the option to attend a young single adult ward composed of other unmarried singles ages 18—
