The general consensus of even the most doubting researchers is to accept a ” ” date as the beginning of the “undisputed” or documented history of the Shroud of Turin. This also happens to coincide with the approximate date determined by the carbon dating of the cloth. Although there is a significant amount of evidence supporting the Shroud’s existence prior to the mid ‘s, much of it is, in fact, “circumstantial” and remains mostly unproven.
In an effort to bring factual information to the viewers of this website, I am including here only the undisputed history as accepted by most scholars. I am also limiting the scope of this history to only the more significant events. A completely detailed Shroud chronology can be found in the book titled “The Blood and the Shroud,” by Ian Wilson, that includes the earlier, more speculative and “circumstantial” material as well.
The Danish bicycle VIN-system is a system introduced in by the Danish government, providing all bicycles in Denmark with a unique code. The code is a combination of letters and digits embedded into the bicycle frame and consists of a manufacturer code, a serial number, and construction year code.. Since , it has been illegal to sell bicycle frames in Denmark without an embedded VIN.
This one in particular, I bought at the beginning of the year. A bike that had the frames and wheelset of a road bike but the bars and gearing of a mountain bike. On the rear it has a Type caliper dating to February Whether it is indexed or not I have no idea. What I do know is that bolting up the 6 speed wheel set I have and trying to use the worn out shifter only moves the chain through 4 gears.
A bit of adjustment might work but the mismatched parts are making me think it might not have the right gear. Crankset The crank set is produced by SR Sakae Ringo and although it is missing both bolt covers it seems to be in pretty good condition.
The History of the Folding Bike
Some of the mid ‘s straight guage frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number. The character began at the start of the alphabet, and indicated year of manufacture.
Detail about the numerals that follow the alphabet are sketchy, and are presumably sequential serial numbers of some kind. A, followed by four numerals

Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications. The cable came with the adjusting barrel. To replace the cable assembly, you would unbolt the adjusting barrel from the caliper. These cables can often be revived by dripping oil into them and working them back and forth. Later Raleigh-made brakes used standard cables with conventional anchor bolts.

Frank Bowden, a successful lawyer and convert to cycling, bought the firm in and in December founded The Raleigh Cycle Company as a limited liability private company. In , Sturmey-Archer gears were added to the product range. Six years later, Bowden bought back Raleigh, which was to remain in family hands for the next quarter century. By the early s, Raleigh was a world leader, capable of producing annually , cycles, , hub gears 15, motorcycles and 50, motorcycle gearboxes.
Raleigh survived the Great Depression well. It acquired Humber cycles in and the following year started producing a three-wheeler car. By , its production of bicycles had grown to nearly , units per annum and the company had stopped making motorcycles and cars. During the Second World War , Raleigh concentrated on munitions work. The name of its budget range, launched in as Gazelle, was changed to Robin Hood, and Raleigh acquired Rudge-Whitworth.
By , it had reached about , , the majority of which was exported. But between and , as increasingly prosperous consumers abandoned the cycle in favour of the car, cycle sales in the UK halved. This led Raleigh in to resume moped production and later to launch a motor scooter. More significantly, during this period Raleigh acquired two major rival groups: Unfortunately, it was a market that was rapidly shrinking.

Seat lug serial number, mens’ Seat lug serial number, ladies’ Dropout serial number, Super Course and Grand Prix Alternate serial system shown Serial convention: At present, I have insufficent information about the serial numbers from this era to construct a definite chart of every example used during this time period. At least 4 or 5 different systems were used. I have uncovered two of them to a reasonable extent; both of which ran concurrently to each other during this time period: This system showed its face in I have named it accordingly , and was phased out in mid Evidence indicates that a handful of ‘ ’71 frames – or their lugs, depending on when the stamping was done – may not have been released from the factory until , and were consequently decaled as models.
This is the only explanation I can suggest regarding this issue. This system never exeeded 6 digits, and the reason for its introduction remains a mystery. Regardless, it is here, and it will stay.
How do you tell how old a Raleigh Grifter is?
As a teenager who needed basic transportation, I purchased a new Raleigh ” Record “. I rode it constantly with a friend who I discovered already had a Raleigh ” Grand Prix “. We loved those bikes and developed quite a bit of brand loyalty. I later lost that Raleigh and the subsequent one I bought, in accidents with cars.
Schwinn Serial Numbers and Date Codes: Dates between and are available because Schwinn kept good records. From on, several different coding systems were used, from which the manufacture date (and often the assembly date) can be decifered.

The engine sat above the bicycle rear wheel, which it drove with a friction-roller on the left-hand end of the crankshaft. On the right, there was a Wipac flywheel magneto, and between this and the roller, a crankcase with bobweight flywheel and a horizontal iron barrel. An alloy head closed this, and the capacity was The petrol tank went over the engine with the number plate fitted behind it.
A means of lifting the roller clear of the tyre was provided.
The frame was free of rust, and in unusually nice condition for its age. I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style.
While possible, this amount of reach is not ideal. There are brake calipers which have enough reach to accomplish the conversion, but they are not in my constellation of desirable components. Instead, I converted it to c, using the existing anodized Dura Ace calipers, which had plenty of reach for a c wheelset.
Raleigh Grifter. K likes. A small community dedicated to the preservation of the grifter, chopper, racers, BMX’s.. in fact all old skool and vintage.
Smallish and plain of ornament it seemed downright unremarkable next to its freakishly collectable turn of the 20th century neighbours. But as I made my way past it, from the corner of my eye I glimpsed a little something that made me examine it closer – ultimately dragging it out into daylight. And there, by the creaking garden gate and under threat of rain, I stood and marveled at that deliciously bizarre feature that distinguished Humber bicycles from other English 3-speeds of its era.
In leu of standard fork blades, Humber devised a fork with skinny twin blades on each side. Okay, so maybe I need to get out more …but still! I mean come on, they are twin fork blades! Founded in in Beeston, England, Humber Cycles were a brand that has always struck me as largely fictional. By the s – when they began manufacturing bicycles as we know them today – original owner Thomas Humber had already sold the company and it was headed, as far as I can tell, by a marketing entity.
This could explain why, at a time when other bicycle manufacturers were making efforts to become more accessible to the general population, Humber boldly branded itself as “The Aristocrat of All Bicycles” inscribed on the seat tube decal – boasting a superior build quality and a plusher ride feel than its competitors. Naturally, these alleged advantages were reflected in the price. Having seen lots of Humber ephemera before ever glimpsing an actual bike, I’ve wondered whether perceptions of these bicycles at the time reflected the marketing message.
After all, by Humber was sold to Raleigh, essentially becoming just another of its sub-brands.
